Back in the Big Apple

TV's favorite fashion competition looks to be in fine form.

Expectations for "Project Runway" have been higher than Alexander McQueen's 10-inch stilettos since last season's lackluster effort. But a viewing of the first episode for season seven (tonight at 10 on Lifetime) indicates "Project Runway" has gotten its guilty-pleasure groove back.

Heidi Klum, Tim Gunn, Nina Garcia and Michael Kors seem more relaxed with the show's return to New York City, and most of the designers seem heavy on talent and drama.

"We're like fat people at an open buffet in Vegas," said designer Emilio Sosa, describing the race for fabrics during the first challenge.

Among the 16 vying for the $100,000 prize are four designers with ties to New England. Anna Lynett attended Rhode Island School of Design; Jonathan Peters hails from Woonsocket, R.I. Most promising are Pittsfield native Pamela Ptak and Maya Luz, who graduated with distinction from Massachusetts College of Art in May.

"One of the casting directors had called the school," said Luz, who just turned 22. "I was like, 'Yeah, I'll do it.' "

Luz describes her European-inspired style as one part classic and two parts over the edge.

"I like to make things wearable, but you have to look twice at them. They're very feminine, but also have a punch," she said.

Ptak thinks about clothes from an Eastern (as in Japanese) aesthetic.

"It's about enveloping the air around the body, making the fabrics arc out into space. That's where the art is," said Ptak, who now lives in Bucks County, Penn. "It's very intellectual. There will be people who don't understand it."

The 47-year-old (the oldest competitor this season) took what she called a meandering route to fashion design via art classes and a career in advertising. In the mid-1990s, she studied dressmaking and design in New York, and worked as a freelance embellisher for Ralph Rucci for three years.

She called Rucci an influence, and a suspension dress with faux ermine insets featured on her Web site illustrates the couturier's impact in her design. But Ptak said, "The world needs clothing, not just the 300 (women) purchasing couture."
