Bowman said an animal control officer who came to pick up the head Tuesday told him two mountain lions roam back and forth between the eastern edge of Apple Valley and Lucerne Valley, and that they can be pretty aggressive.

The Bowmans got a rather disturbing reminder of just how close their Yucca Road home is to the vast Mojave Desert, when they discovered the head of a wild animal in their yard Tuesday morning.

Brian Cronin with San Bernardino County Animal Control, which was called to the scene, said the head belonged to a mule deer. And Cronin said they assume either a coyote or mountain lion was responsible for the kill.

Though Dan Bowman didn't hear any sounds of a struggle Monday night, his neighbor told him he got up to let his dog out and the dog refused. Bowman also spotted large paw prints around his property in the morning.

Officials from the San Bernardino County Sheriff 's Victor Valley station said they haven't had any recent calls about mountain lion or coyote sightings in the area. However a warning was issued about mountain lions near Running Springs and other communities in the San Bernardino mountains.

"It's kind of wild out here on the edge of the desert," Bowman said, recalling a mountain lion caught sunning itself in his backyard last summer and sighting a few bobcats since then.

Though he enjoys his occasional encounters, Bowman said he definitely keeps his distance -- which is exactly what officials advise.

Anyone who spots a mountain lion is asked to call 911 and report sightings to their local animal control. Residents are also advised to keep a close eye on pets and to avoid letting them out at night.
