Marrow donor's example leads to spike in volunteers

Jan. 13--APPLE VALLEY --After several rounds of testing and an intense procedure, Jenni Kramer is now waiting to find out if the bone marrow she donated will help save the life of a 6-month-old girl battling leukemia.

In the meantime, Kramer's example and willingness to share her story in the Jan. 5 edition of the Daily Press inspired a spike in donations at the blood drive hosted by Apple Valley the same day as her procedure. The town easily surpassed its donation goal and 10 people signed up to be on the national registry of marrow donors.
Kramer said the procedure to extract her marrow at St. Joseph Hospital of Orange went very smoothly on Thursday, with "some soreness but not any real pain."
"Now that the easy part, the harvest, is done and went well, the baby girl and her family have the hard part," Kramer said, "the fight of her little life."
Though details about the recipient are kept confidential, the hospital explained to Kramer that the baby girl had to go through chemotherapy the week before the procedure, to deplete her own cells so that her body would be more likely to accept Kramer's. Then, with marrow only good for up to 48 hours after it's harvested, the infant had to undergo her transplant right away.
LifeStream -- the blood bank that coordinated the town's drive and Kramer's donation -- told her it will be a couple of weeks before they learn whether the procedure was ultimately successful in helping to save the infant's life. But when they do find out, Kramer will be one of the first to know.
