LG seeks growth in smartphones

LG Electronics is aiming to overtake local rival Samsung Electronics to become the world's number two mobile phone maker by 2012 as it targets rapid growth of its small smartphone business.
"Obviously, we have to achieve much higher growth than the other players in the overall phone market as well as the smartphone business, but I think we can become the number two player by 2012 if we improve our platforms," Skott Ahn, president of LG's mobile communications division, said yesterday.
"The smartphone market is changing very fast. There is no absolute winner or loser in this market yet. This can give us a huge opportunity. We will focus on developing a hit product that can shake the market."
LG has a 10 per cent global market share in handsets, compared to Samsung's 20 per cent. But the world's third-largest handset maker is a latecomer to high-margin smartphones, claiming less than 1 per cent. Nokia, Research in Motion and Apple are the big three smartphone suppliers.
