Bangladesh, May 15 -- Research on animals shows that seed extract of 'kalojam' (black berry) significantly prevents or slows down liver diseases (hepatic diseases) resulting from alcoholism (chronic liquor drinking) and related free radical-induced tissue injury.
Free radical is a highly reactive chemical reactant that causes various types of harm to the body's biological and biochemical function leading to many serious diseases, reports UNB.
'Kalojam' seed extract scavenges and decreases the liver lipid peroxides, the most culprit free radical species, which punctures liver cells and elevates the serum enzyme level. The extract also significantly decreases the levels of bad cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol) and triglyceride in liver and blood.
Prof Dr Md Shahadat Hossain of the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Jahangirnagar University and his associates tested the effect of the kalojam-seed extract on the liver enzymes and cholesterol levels of alcohol consumed-rats to produce a model condition for the alcohol drinkers.
The study results show that kalojam seed has reduced and normalised the enzyme activities of Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) and Glutamate Oxaloacetate Transaminase (GOT) which are increased in the alcohol-consumed rats.
The levels of these enzymes increase during various liver diseases as indicator of liver dysfunction like fatty liver, jaundice, hepatitis, cirrhosis and cancer.

Canada's RIM (Research in Motion) expects a boost on sales of BlackBerry smart phones as soon as it starts local manufacturing outsourced to Flextronics, that runs a plant at Sorocaba (Sao Paulo). Prices would be more competitive, and affordable to a rage of customers, while imported BlackBerry handsets are currently utilised by high income consumers only. In spite of this smart phones sales are growing at 30% annually.
Post Salman Khan last month, Amitabh Bachchan is the latest Bollywood name on the Twitter circuit. He woke up on Tuesday morning and filled his page with three tweets. Dutifully, his first tweet was to his son, who we assume paved the way for the Senior Bachchan to follow. His Twitter handle reads SrBachchan, (after Abhishek who is juniorbachchan) and the 67-year-old actor is happily fidgeting his way through the microblogging site.
Interestingly, not many on the Bollywood circuit have started following him yet.
Funny and cheeky, Big B's bio reads, "Actor ... well at least some are STILL saying so!!" But unlike his blog, which is cluttered by his philosophical musings, his twitter page is more footloose, as of now.
Ironically, his last blog post mused about his indulgence with technology. "I am certain it shall not be taking too long before I would be in the enviable position of the master of the Mac and the Nokia..." he wrote.
The only person Big B is currently following is his son. It remains to be seen if Big B's tribe on Twitter will increase.
-The other day, I walked across my blazing-hot deck and hacked the basil plants hard. They needed pruning, and I needed a bunch of the aromatic herb to make... ice cream.
Basil-flavored ice cream may sound weird, but it's one of the tamer treats in "Spice Dreams," a just-published cookbook featuring recipes for chocolate ice cream with cumin and fennel, chile-lemongrass ice cream, and almond ice cream with turmeric, cardamom and cloves.
Standing in my kitchen, I was doubly daunted. The recipes read long, plus I'd have to climb into the recesses of a cabinet to retrieve a long-dormant ice cream maker.
Turns out, digging into the cabinet was the hardest part, and the result around my house is that we're all swooning over odd-flavored ice creams.
"Spice Dreams" recipes include sorbets, frozen yogurts and popsicles. The ice creams are custard-style -- calling for egg yolks -- which requires a little more work but yields an impossibly sensuous treat.
First up: basil ice cream. I wondered how this would taste while preparing to scald milk that would be infused with torn bits of basil.
Frankly, I also wondered how to scald milk, a technique rarely required in our age of pasteurization. Basically, you heat milk slowly in a heavy-bottomed pan until tiny bubbles appear at the edges -- just before the milk boils or burns.
Before starting, know this: Making ice cream requires undivided attention. It's best, perhaps, to pretend that you're a celebrity television chef and have everything prepped and measured beforehand.
Using the celebrity-chef method, in less than an hour of whisking, stirring, straining and pouring from this pan into that, I had custard cooling in the fridge and almost ready for the ice cream maker.
Time to turn from herbs to spices: cinnamon-raspberry cheesecake ice cream. Rather, make that cinnamon-blackberry cheesecake ice cream.
Earlier in the week, I heard that Wink Henley, a farmer in Pungo, had a stunning crop of blackberries just beginning to ripen. Because the cookbook's authors encourage swapping out fruits and spices and using whatever is in season or on hand, it gave me a reason to go there and pick a pail of the thumb-sized, jet-black berries. (Henley's blackberry vines open for picking today.)
Gently folding the shiny, local berries into the soft ice cream only heightened the anticipation of eating. When it was finally ready, the richness was the first thing that struck me. This ice cream is a distant relation to the mass-produced, artificially flavored family of ice creams at the grocery store.
The cinnamon-blackberry cheesecake ice cream is so creamy that simply swirling it around in the bowl with a spoon evokes a dreamy calm. It tastes old-fashioned, like a Norman Rockwell painting, and it's so rich that a small serving is fully satisfying.
The bite of cinnamon perfectly complements the fruity, slightly tart blackberries. In short, this is one decadent dessert.
The authors suggest serving the basil ice cream after a spicy meal or barbecue. That sounds great, but I just plopped the frozen Tupperware container on the counter and grabbed a spoon.
The licorice flavor of basil melted into the sweetness of the custard. I handed my neighbor a spoon.
"Oh, yummmmm," she said. "Can I double-dip?"
Bangladesh, Aug. 3 -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is among a growing number of countries that are banning cell phone or imposing strict restrictions on its use. There are over 500,000 Black Berry users in UAE. Black Berry services allow users to act without any legal accountability causing judicial and national security concerns.
The UAE, citing security concerns announced last Sunday that it would suspend Black Berry mobile services like e-mail and text messaging from October, the New York Times (NYT) in a front page story reported today. This is the latest high-stakes clash between governments and communications-providers over flow of digital information. Black Berry's highly encrypted data system offers security to users but makes it difficult for governments to monitor communications.
The decision of the UAE will influence other countries in the region as well. Saudi Arabia is closely watching the situation. Kuwait and Bahrain have been alarmed by the security concerns. Governments and communication-providers have been at odds over issues surrounding privacy and censorship. Pakistan and Turkey have blocked use of YouTubes.
Pakistan blocked Facebook because it highlighted anti-Islamic themes.
The intelligence agencies in India had threatened to prevent the operation of Black Berry unless it opens its operations for scrutiny. The company refused.
Grupo Iusacell, a provider of wireless cellular third generation services in Mexico with a national footprint, announced that it has successfully commercialized the BlackBerry Tour smart phone as an option for business travelers.
The company stated that the BlackBerry Tour, better known as the "world telephone," is a cellular handset that works with dual technology -- GSM and CDMA, depending on which is the most efficient network of the country you are located in -- allowing easy access to voice services, as well as maximum data speed in Mexico and the entire world.
The new BlackBerry Tour smart phone, exclusive to Grupo Iusacell in Mexico, offers access to the most advanced multimedia applications, GPS location services, e-mail or video transmission with efficiency and what the company called very competitive roaming and international long distance rates.
The company noted that the Blackberry Tour increases productivity for thousands of users and Grupo Iusacell is the only cellular telephony service in Mexico with this new tool.
