LG seeks growth in smartphones

LG Electronics is aiming to overtake local rival Samsung Electronics to become the world's number two mobile phone maker by 2012 as it targets rapid growth of its small smartphone business.

"Obviously, we have to achieve much higher growth than the other players in the overall phone market as well as the smartphone business, but I think we can become the number two player by 2012 if we improve our platforms," Skott Ahn, president of LG's mobile communications division, said yesterday.

"The smartphone market is changing very fast. There is no absolute winner or loser in this market yet. This can give us a huge opportunity. We will focus on developing a hit product that can shake the market."

LG has a 10 per cent global market share in handsets, compared to Samsung's 20 per cent. Kodak Alleges Patent Infringement by Apple and RIM

Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE:EK) announced today that it has filed lawsuits against Apple Inc. and Research In Motion Limited (RIM) alleging the infringement of Kodak digital imaging technology.

The Kodak complaint, filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), specifically claims that Apple's iPhones and RIM's camera-enabled BlackBerry devices infringe a Kodak patent that covers technology related to a method for previewing images. Separately, Kodak filed two suits today against Apple in U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York that claim the infringement of patents related to digital cameras and certain computer processes.

"Kodak has a long history of digital imaging innovation and we have invested hundreds of millions of dollars creating our industry-leading patent portfolio," said Laura G. Quatela, Chief Intellectual Property Officer, and Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company. "In the case of Apple and RIM, we've had discussions for years with both companies in an attempt to resolve this issue amicably, and we have not been able to reach a satisfactory agreement. In light of that, we are taking this action to ensure that we protect the interests of our shareholders and the existing licensees of our technology.

"Our primary interest is not to disrupt the availability of any product but to obtain fair compensation for the use of our technology," Quatela said. "There's a basic issue of fairness that needs to be addressed. Those devices use Kodak technology, and we are merely seeking compensation for the use of our technology in their products."

Kodak has licensed digital imaging technology to approximately 30 companies, including such leading mobile-device companies as LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson, all of which are royalty bearing to Kodak.

On Dec. 17, in an action involving Samsung and Kodak, an ITC Administrative Law Judge issued a ruling declaring that the Kodak patent covering color image preview (No. 6,292,218) was valid and enforceable, and that Samsung's camera-enabled mobile devices infringed upon that Kodak patent.

In the complaint against Apple and RIM, Kodak is seeking from the ITC a limited exclusion order preventing the importation of infringing devices, including certain mobile telephones and wireless communication devices featuring digital cameras.

In the first suit against Apple in U.S. District Court, Kodak alleges infringement of two patents generally covering image preview and the processing of images of different resolutions. In the second suit, Kodak alleges infringement of patents that describe a method by which a computer program can "ask for help" from another application to carry out certain computer-oriented functions. The allegations in the second suit apply to any Apple product that uses the processing method described above. The patents at issue in the second suit were previously the subject of litigation between Kodak and Sun Microsystems Inc., and in that case, a federal jury determined in a 2004 trial that Sun's Java programming technology had infringed the patents. Kodak later settled the suit by agreeing to a payment from Sun in return for a license for the patents at issue.

In both District Court actions against Apple, Kodak is seeking to permanently enjoin Apple from further infringement as well as unspecified damages.

"We remain open to negotiating a fair and amicable agreement with both Apple and RIM, which has always been our preference and our practice with other licensees," Quatela said. "We seek to avoid litigation in our licensing programs whenever possible. But when the infringement is persistent, we will act to defend the interests of our shareholders and licensees, and to promote the fair compensation that is the bedrock of innovation."

Kodak has a long history of digital innovation. In 1975, Kodak invented the digital camera, and in 1976, Kodak invented the Bayer color filter array, which allows digital cameras to capture images in color. The company has a portfolio of more than 1,000 digital imaging patents, and to this day, Kodak continues to bring innovation to the marketplace. Kodak Hits Apple, RIM Over Patents

Fresh off getting royalty-paying deals with Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics for its digital-camera technology, Eastman Kodak Co. is going after Apple Inc. and Research In Motion Ltd.

The iconic camera maker said Thursday it filed two lawsuits against Apple and a complaint with the International Trade Commission against both Apple and RIM, alleging their phones and other products infringe on Kodak's digital-imaging technology.

Kodak didn't specify the amount of compensatory damages it seeks, and it hasn't quantified the benefits it expects from agreements it reached with Samsung Monday and LG in November as part of settlements in similar trade disputes. But Kodak said an ITC administrative law judge found the same patent involved in the Apple and RIM ITC disputes to be valid and enforceable in the Samsung case.

Kodak said it owns more than 1,000 patents involving digital imaging, which is the primary focus of Kodak's research and development spending, according to Kodak spokesman David Lanzillo. The three companies have been neck and neck in patent issuances in recent years, with Kodak registering 296 in 2009, RIM 306 and Apple 289, according to IFI Patent Intelligence.

"We are seeing faster-cycle technology innovation," said Frank Gens, chief analyst at technology research firm IDC. "You have to be very good at generating intellectual property and protecting it." He added that many technology companies are ramping up their patent businesses as the mobile Internet, cloud computing and other technologies are poised to change the technology landscape.

Falling sales and profits for Kodak's traditional film and photo-finishing operations have increased the importance of its digital businesses and of using its broad patent portfolio to generate revenue and profits. Kodak has set a goal of collecting $250 million to $350 million in annual intellectual-property-licensing revenue for the next several years.

But through the third quarter, such revenue was on track to generate only $175 million to $200 million of the company's estimated $7.25 billion in revenue, according to Citi Investment Research. The firm has said that patent-licensing revenue is expected to generate 10% to 15% of Kodak's gross profit in 2009.

Kodak alleged Thursday that Apple's iPhones and RIM's camera-enabled BlackBerry phones infringe on a Kodak patent that covers technology related to image previewing. Kodak also filed two other suits against Apple Thursday in the U.S. court for the Western District of New York that claim patent infringement "related to digital cameras and certain computer processes." Kodak's court filing said Apple has infringed on a Kodak patent that links data between objects with its iMac, Mac Pro, MacBook, iPhone, iPod Touch and other products.

Apple and RIM declined to comment.

Laura Quatela, chief intellectual-property officer at Kodak, said the company has had talks with Apple and RIM "for years" to reach a deal. "We have invested hundreds of millions of dollars creating our industry-leading patent portfolio," she said in a statement. "We are taking this action to ensure that we protect the interests of our shareholders and the existing licensees of our technology."

Kodak said it has licensed digital-imaging technology to about 30 companies, including some leaders in the mobile-device industry. It isn't looking to disrupt the availability of any devices but seeks "fair compensation for the use of our technology" in Apple and RIM products, the company said.

RIM and Apple, both deep-pocketed companies that make products containing hundreds of components, are common targets of patent-infringement suits. In 2006, RIM paid $613 million to settle a closely watched lawsuit with NTP Inc., a Virginia patent-holding company. Last year, the BlackBerry maker paid $268 million to settle a dispute with Visto Corp., a closely held wireless-email provider.

Apple, meanwhile, is embroiled in a high-profile patent dispute with Nokia Corp. In December, Nokia broadened that dispute by filing a complaint against Apple to the ITC. The ITC has become a popular venue for patent-infringement cases since a 2006 U.S. Supreme Court ruling made it more difficult to obtain injunctions banning sales of infringing products, said Charles Macedo, lawyer at Amster Rothstein & Ebenstein LLP.

That is because the ITC has the power to issue exclusion orders banning imports of infringing products, which is tantamount to an injunction when products made outside the U.S. are involved. Cease-and-desist orders issued by the ITC are governed by a different standard than the 2006 Supreme Court decision, Mr. Macedo noted.

In September, RIM chose to settle an ITC case with Saxon Innovations LLC, a Texas patent-holding company, rather than risk a negative outcome at an ITC hearing. Settlement terms weren't disclosed. RIM is still facing an ITC complaint by Prism Technologies LLC, a closely held Omaha, Neb., company.

Rain is in arena's forecast

There never has been any shortage of bands that play Beatles songs, but only one seemingly carries its audiences back in time. For more than 20 years, the band Rain has presented a show that visually and musically recreates the history of the group from its first appearance on the "Ed Sullivan Show" in February 1964 to its final public concert, Jan. 30, 1969, on the rooftop of its Savile Row Apple headquarters in London.

The four hollow-point bullets that ended John Lennon's life also destroyed any hope the Beatles would create musical magic again.

When George Harrison died, another cornerstone of the foursome that's widely considered the greatest rock 'n' roll band of all time was gone. What remains is a musical oeuvre that continues to attract new listeners decades after the last note was recorded.

At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the University of Virginia's John Paul Jones Arena, Rain will present "A Tribute to the Beatles." Tickets range from $37 to $50.

"Our goal is to give the audience the experience of seeing the Beatles live," said Steve Landes, who portrays Lennon. "We come at this from a professional musician's standpoint.

"We've all done other things, such as session work, backing up other artists and writing and recording our own music. And we were all part of the Broadway show 'Beatlemania.'

"We wanted to reach that Broadway-quality pinnacle on our own with this show. With the multimedia videos, full sets and more than a half-dozen costume changes, we've really brought this to a production-show level."

Rain is said to be the only band that can reproduce note for note the full range of the Beatles' discography live onstage. This obviously includes all the complex and challenging songs the Fab Four only performed in the recording studio.

"A big part of the process is using our ears and picking apart every song," Landes said. "We can't go to sheet music or anything like that, because that doesn't have the detail and authenticity we're striving for.

"So we pick up what we're going to play by listening to the records and delving into them any way we can. 'Sergeant Pepper,' for instance, has four vocal harmonies and four guitar parts.

"We've got two guitars on stage and three vocals. So we have to be creative and decide how to reinterpret it so the audience feels they are getting every part."

Rain evolved out of a Southern California rock band that formed in the mid-1970s and was originally called Reign. The group specialized in Beatles music and eventually took on the name Rain, which is also a title of a Beatles song.

The band gained national recognition when Dick Clark selected it to record the music for the 1979 made-for-television movie "Birth of the Beatles." Each of the make-believe Beatles got plenty of practice while touring with "Beatlemania."

Joining Landes on stage are Joey Curatolo, who portrays Paul McCartney; Joe Bithorn, who re-enacts George Harrison; Ralph Castelli, who plays Ringo Starr; and founding member Mark Lewis, who plays keyboard and percussion and represents the "fifth Beatle."

The five members of Rain have studied the music with meticulous care, ensuring every note and nuance is faithfully recreated. This top-notch imitation moved a critic with the Portland Oregonian newspaper to write, "The band contains better musicians than the Beatles, but then, they'd almost have to be in order to recreate the sound so well."

All the music Tuesday evening will be performed live, with no prerecorded tapes or sequences. Adding to the visual presentation will be historical film footage projected onto screens.

Rain has performed throughout Europe -- and, perhaps most memorably, in Liverpool, England, the Beatles' hometown.

"Presenting the show in Liverpool was one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences," Landes said.

"We did our full show at the Empire Theatre, which is the big theater in town.

"It was packed with 3,500 people and they loved the show. The next night we did a small set at the Cavern Club, where the Beatles got their start. People had to be turned away.

"As a Beatles fan, I've seen the footage of them doing the song 'Some Other Guy' in the Cavern literally thousands of times. To get up there on stage and see it from their perspective had to be the most surreal thing I've ever done.

"Bottom line is we want to give the audience the experience of seeing the Beatles live by recreating the songs we all know and love."

Most tablet computers lost in Apple anticipation

Apple Inc. was like a ghost haunting the halls of the Las Vegas convention center last week.

Several companies unveiled tablet computers at the Consumer Electronics Show, but over all of them lurked the specter of the portable device Apple is expected to announce in a few weeks.

Tablets aren't new.

They're basically touch-screen laptops without a physical keyboard.

Microsoft Corp. has been pushing the platform to a disinterested public since the Windows XP era.

At CES this year, Dell Inc., Lenovo and others took the wraps off tablet designs that ranged from functional to funky.

Even Microsoft is grimly forging ahead one more time with a Hewlett-Packard Co.-built "slate" that will run Windows 7.

But Apple has already transformed previously staid industries -- notably MP3 players and smart phones -- and many expect it to do so with tablets.

Analyst estimates and predictions now for the fabled Apple tablet are about as reliable and consistent as a Magic 8 Ball.

Apple will sell roughly 1.4 million tablets in 2010!

Do I hear $1,000?

There are a handful of consistent rumors around the Apple tablet, but that's all they are. Most observers now expect a 10-inch screen that will run a version of the iPhone operating system (which is itself a modified version of Apple's desktop OS X).

It will be a touch screen, of course, for easy navigation.

And you can probably expect your current portfolio of iPhone and iPod Touch apps to run on the tablet, although it's unknown whether they'll be scaled up in size to fit the larger tablet screen or run in a small window in their original size.

There's less agreement on whether the machine will come with built-in 3G wireless Internet access and be sold with a two-year contract like the iPhone.

Perhaps there will be two versions: a lower-priced version that requires a two-year contract and an unsubsidized version that only offers Wi-Fi connectivity.

How much memory will the tablet have?

What's the screen resolution?

Will it come in pink?

Magic 8 Ball says: Ask again later.

Heck, Apple hasn't even confirmed it will make any kind of announcement this month. The Jan. 27 news conference is, itself, just a leaked rumor (although almost certainly true).

Lost in all the Apple anticipation are the real-world products that other manufacturers are already showing off.

Dell, for instance, seems far along in development of its Mini 5 tablet. The demo version at CES looked and felt like a finished product, and the software was crisp and responsive.

The Microsoft/HP slate is a bit more amorphous and was shown only in a stage demonstration by Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer. Microsoft opted not to put the slate on display at the convention.

But even if Apple does release one tablet to rule them all, some experts doubt it will be much of an empire.

"How many devices does someone really need?" said Kurt Scherf, principal analyst with Dallas-based Parks Associates. "I've got a notebook. I've got a netbook. Now I'm going to get a tablet? What is that really going to do for me?"

Another research firm, IDC, recently reported that worldwide tablet PC sales peaked at about 1.5 million in 2007 and slipped to 1.3 million units in 2008.

By 2013, that number should inch back up to about 1.9 million, the research firm said.

But that growth rate will be so slow that tablet computers will actually lose share in the overall computer segment, dipping from 1.5 percent of all portable PC shipments in 2006 to 0.6 percent in 2013.

Scherf said he does see an opportunity for tablets to eventually displace the growing category of black-and-white e-books such as Amazon's Kindle.

DiSibio's interest was piqued when he experienced a particular application called Shazaam.

He could not identify a song on the radio, so a friend with the Apple iPhone simply put the device to the radio and the Shazaam app displayed the title of the song.

"When I saw folks so interested in these apps, I found myself intrigued by the next generation of sales in this country," DiSibio said. "I'd never seen one, never used one and never owned an iPhone; but since, I have found it well worthwhile and a great experience."

This prompted DiSibio and partners to create "I Need a Doctor," an app used to locate a doctor anywhere in the United States.

It's been marketed as a companion for road warrior businessmen and women.

Users plug in their location, and the program finds them local doctors and contact information.

Beyond simply finding doctors, it calls upon an extensive database of general and specialty physicians -- more than 800,000 of them in total -- and allows users to see peer and patient ratings.

"For four decades, I have traveled extensively. And I realized that the smart phone affords travelers of all types -- business, vacation, relocation, student travelers -- the ability to find qualified medical assistance when local knowledge was unavailable," DiSibio said.

After forming a company to develop the software -- The Paladin Group -- DiSibio linked up with some local design talent and a nationally recognized software designer.

The design was done by Steve Muller, vice president of leadership development for URS.

"(Muller) was the guy who did all the graphics for the app and is really talented," DiSibio said, adding that an intern from USC Aiken has also been working with his team.

"Chris Carter is an intern we hired out of USC Aiken who has done a lot of leg work for us in promoting the app with bloggers," he said.

While the app has been displayed in full-page advertisements in The New York Times and other publications, it still takes some marketing to stand out in a marketplace with more than 150,000 other applications, DiSibio said.

Next on the agenda for DiSibio and Paladin is to develop a similar app with medical tips and then possibly moving into other programs, he said.

Man charged with shooting son

A Louisa County father was released on bond yesterday after being charged with shooting his 18-year-old son in the chest.

William Hamilton Taylor, 48, of the 800 block of Old Apple Grove Road in Mineral, is charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling and reckless handling of a firearm.

His son, William H. Taylor Jr., suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest from a .38-caliber revolver shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday.

He was flown by helicopter to VCU Medical Center in Richmond, according to a news release from the Louisa County Sheriff's Office.

Maj. Donald Lowe of the Louisa Sheriff's Office said yesterday that the son was in stable condition and is expected to survive.

Lowe said investigators did not yet know what led to the shooting. The Sheriff's Office hadn't received any previous reports of problems at that house, he said.

Taylor was arraigned on all but the malicious-wounding charges yesterday in Louisa County General District Court and was released on a $2,500 bond.

BRIEF: Apple might be opening store in Fayette Mall

In a posting on job site Monster.com, Apple is soliciting applications for employees at a store it plans on opening in Fayette Mall this summer, according to the posting. A spokeswoman for the company did not return a message left Thursday afternoon.

Myron Worley, general manager at Fayette Mall, declined to confirm the posting's statement.

"We'd love to have them here at Fayette Mall," he said. "They're a store people have said they wanted, but we don't have anything in place, or I'd obviously be happy to tell you that it's happening."

He said the mall is fully leased, so "to make space for a store like Apple, we would have to rearrange some space ... whether we can bring that about or not, time will tell."

The Apple Store has become a popular destination for the brand's loyal fans, as it offers hands-on experiences with the company's products, as well as technical support.

An Apple Store is located inside the University of Kentucky Bookstore inside the UK Student Center on Euclid Avenue, but because it's a campus retail store with education discounts, the public can't shop there.

The closest public Apple Store locations to Lexington are at Louisville's Oxmoor Center and Cincinnati's Kenwood Towne Centre.

Apple Valley halts High Desert Church expansion: Dilemma similar to Victorville zoning issue

--Plans for the Victor Valley's largest church to launch an "East Valley campus" have been in the works for roughly two years, with High Desert Church looking to bring its message closer to home for residents of Apple Valley, east Hesperia and Lucerne Valley.

Now -- with a year-long contract to hold services at Apple Valley's UltraStar Cinemas signed, a couple hundred thousand dollars committed to the project and the opening a month away -- the town has pulled the welcome mat out from under HDC.

"It is not allowed under our Places of Assembly Ordinance," Apple Valley s p o ke s wo m a n K at h i e Martin said, citing a zoning law approved in 2006 that prohibits churches in commercial areas.

If this story sounds familiar, it's because Ontario-based Loveland Church is currently facing the same battle with the city of Victorville over the services it's held at the Mall of Victor Valley's Cinemark for the last two years.

After seeing Daily Press stories on the Loveland situation, Josh Bishop, communications manager with HDC, said church officials took the initiative and went to Town Hall to make sure there wouldn't be any conflicts with their proposal.

"We were very surprised to hear that, essentially because of zoning laws, they said we can't meet at the UltraStar," Bishop said. With hundreds of churches holding services in movie theaters across the country, he said, "Everyone we have talked to has said this has never happened before."

B i s h o p s a i d H D C has purchased roughly $100,000 in sound and projection equipment to use at the site, with delivery expected today. They also spent thousands more on advertising, with a billboard set to go up along Interstate 15 on Wednesday and radio spots he's now scrambling to cancel.

"Groups rent theaters all the time for meetings, broadcasts..." said Damon Rubio, vice president of operations for UltraStar Cinemas, who is hearing second-hand the news about losing tens of thousands of dollars in revenue from HDC.

T h e 2 0 0 0 fe d e ra l Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act prohibits governments from establishing zoning "in a manner that treats a religious assembly or institution on less than equal terms with a nonreligious assembly or institution," adding that the law should be interpreted "in favor of a broad protection of religious exercise."

"Our attorney has reviewed the situation," Martin said, "and said we are correct in our interpretation of our code, and not in violation of federal law in denying this use."

There is no appeal process for the church to go through and no special permit or license that will allow them to legally hold services at the theater, according to town code.

Bishop said his 8,000-member congregation is still reeling from the news. With the church typically against taking legal or political action, he really doesn't know where they'll go from here.

The idea for an East Va l l ey c a m p u s wa s sparked a couple of years ago, Bishop said, when the church did some research and found that fewer families were willing to brave the area's ever-increasing traffic to travel from the east edge of Apple Valley or Hesperia to HDC's Hook Boulevard site in Victorville.

They did some testr u n s at s c h o o l s i n Hesperia, with up to 500 people attending Easter or Christmas Eve services. But when they looked for a permanent location for the new campus -- and considered the 5,500 current HDC members who live in Apple Valley -- Bishop said they found UltraStar near the corner of Bear Valley and Central roads to be the best fit.

The plan, promoted on fliers passed out at recent HDC services, was to have a live worship band at the site and then to broadcast the sermon delivered at the Victorville church to UltraStar's big screen.

"I am licensed to show broadcasts. That's what my business is ..." Rubio said. "The city should have the right to monitor what businesses are where, but they don't have a right to censure the kind of people I do business with."

Rubio said as far as he's concerned, he still has a right to rent a few hundred seats to members of HDC every Sunday.

Mophie Unveils IPhone Payment Card Reader

To complete a transaction, the merchant slides a consumer's payment card through the reader and enters on the phone's screen the amount of funds the consumer is going to pay. The merchant then turns the iPhone horizontally, and the application displays on the screen an area for customers to sign for the transaction using a finger, reports OhGizmo. The merchant then presses an onscreen button to process the transaction, and the application displays a notification letting the merchant know when transactions have been authorized.

Mophie, a Paw Paw, Mich.-based provider of technology accessory products such as smartphone batteries, last week at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas unveiled details regarding its payment card reader for Apple Inc.'s iPhone (see story) , according OhGizmo.com, a technology blog.

Mophie representatives did not return PaymentSource requests for information or comment.

Mophie incorporates the card reader into a case that covers the back and sides of the mobile phone. The card reader extends from the bottom of the phone. The product attaches to the iPhone through its 30-pin connector, which also connects the phone to a computer or other accessories, reports OhGizmo.

Mophie also launched a transaction application that enables merchants to complete purchases using an iPhone. Merchants may use the card reader with other payment card processing applications on the market, according to OhGizmo.

Mophie has yet to set a price for the card reader but plans to make it available later this year, reports OhGizmo.

Mophie's card-payment device for the iPhone is debuting after Square Inc. and VeriFone Holdings Inc. announced their own iPhone card readers in December.

"The ease of the technology is causing an explosion" of card-related iPhone applications, says Todd Ablowitz, president of Double Diamond Group, a Centennial, Colo.-based consulting firm. "It's the space of the moment, but I question how much new transaction volume is really coming from it."

Yellow Model A gold to Harrells

More than 50 years ago, he can't recall the exact year, Ralph Harrell bought a 1929 Ford Model A sport coupe he spotted in pieces in a driveway on Breckenridge Road.

"I traded him a real nice '53 Buick Roadmaster. It was perfect," 82-year-old Harrell recalled. "That car would be worth more today than that Model A."

But Ralph and June Harrell value the eight-decades-old Model A as if it were gold. They have driven it every year since the mid 1950s, hauling their two daughters in the rumble seat and delighting passers-by as they tool along in the yellow vehicle.

On a summer day a decade ago, the Harrells were on a pleasure drive around Lake Monroe when a couple flagged them down. "Here comes this old couple," Ralph said as June added "they were about our age."

"They said that when they got married they went to New York in a car just like ours and we asked if they wanted to go for a ride," Harrell recalled. He and June helped the couple into the rumble seat "and we rode them all around the lake and they just hooped and hollered."

When the drive ended, the elderly couple had a difficult time extricating themselves from the compact back seat. "We almost never got them out," Harrell said. "Really. It was tough."

He insisted that I crawl into the rumble seat, and once there I didn't want to leave. What a great place for a passenger. I finally climbed out, gracefully, when Harrell said he would not take me for a ride because of the ice and snow outside. He said if I come back on a sunny warm day we will go cruising.

I got the story of the Model A, and a few other cars stashed in the back of his automotive garage in Bedford, while sitting as close as I could to a cast iron wood stove emitting waves of heat. Neighbor Raymond Deckard, who has lived in the same place since 1940, joined us. Maybe it was the fresh pot of coffee and jug of half-and-half, or possibly the platter of fried apple fritters from the Magic Morning Bakery that lured him over.

More likely, it was to spend time with June and Ralph Harrell, two of the nicest people you would ever want to meet. Even though Harrell "retired" from the car fixing and painting business years ago, he and Deckard still tinker with friends' cars, and lawn mowers. Two years ago, they rebuilt the Model A's engine. You will find them there most days in Harrell's garage at the north edge of Bedford complete with framed photos on the wall ranging from cars restored over the years to Dolly Parton at her buxom best.

The men take car mechanics seriously; Harrell diagnosed my slipping transmission by my description of the car's behavior alone.

After coffee and treats, Harrell announced it was time to go to the back room. Sure, I wanted to see his 1926 Model T truck (custom built over the years and bearing a resemblance to Mr. Haney's peddler's truck on the television show "Green Acres." I don't know about you, but I can sing the theme song all the way through . "Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside .")

So, I left the warmth of the wood stove to see the old truck, which the Harrells drive in area parades. It is adorned with things such as his family's heirloom moonshine jug, his father's nail keg, a chicken coop, a stretched-out rabbit hide and even a pair of moose horns as a hood ornament of sorts.

He also has a shiny black, quite sleek 1951 four-door Chevrolet sedan parked back there. It turns out that during his years as a teacher at Bedford North Lawrence High School's vocational school, Harrell's students got to try their hand at car painting by taking on a section of the old Chevy.

"Dozens of kids painted this car," he said proudly, "One would get a quarter panel, another, the trunk lid."

As I admired the sedan, Harrell brought out two dried-up fox carcasses he hangs on the Model T truck for parades. I took one look and ran back to the wood stove.

ATandT, Verizon in price war

Cellphones are not just about voice anymore. Since Apple launched the iPhone three years ago, it turned the industry pricing model upside down.

A price war broke out Friday in the wireless industry, as Verizon Wireless and Dallas-based AT&T Inc. traded cuts on some of their monthly plans.

When the dust cleared, both carriers had announced lower fees starting Monday for some of their unlimited voice plans. AT&T also slashed the cost of one of its voice and data plans for smart phones, including the popular iPhone.

Verizon got things started by slicing the monthly price for unlimited voice minutes on a single line from $99.99 down to $69.99.

On a single line with unlimited voice minutes as well as unlimited text, photo and video messaging, the monthly fee is falling from $119.99 to $89.99.

Prices on family plans with unlimited voice minutes and family plans with both unlimited voice and unlimited messaging also are going down.

AT&T is matching those cuts dollar-for-dollar.

Both companies will allow existing customers to switch to the new plans without penalty or contract extension.

But AT&T went a step further. It will cut the price of its unlimited voice and unlimited Internet data plan for smart phones like the iPhone from $129.99 to $99.99 per month.

That's not AT&T's cheapest smart phone plan -- all of which include unlimited data -- but it does slice $30 off the monthly bill of any smart phone user who needs unlimited voice minutes.

Text messaging, though, is still an extra charge.

"Our new plans reflect customers' continuing desire to do more with their phones -- including talking and browsing the Web at the same time," Ralph de la Vega, president and chief executive of AT&T mobility and consumer markets, said in a statement.

Verizon Wireless has about 89 million customers. AT&T has about 82 million wireless customers.

Independent telecom industry analyst Jeff Kagan said he was surprised it took so long for the two companies to make a move.

He expects more cuts to come for data plans as carriers battle over a dwindling number of wireless holdouts and users who are still clinging to basic handsets.

"The prices of unlimited data plans are going to continue dropping," Kagan said via e-mail. "Data plans are the future. Cellphones are not just about voice anymore. Since Apple launched the iPhone three years ago, it turned the industry pricing model upside down."

Neither Sprint Nextel Corp. nor T-Mobile USA Inc., the next two largest wireless providers in the U.S., announced price cuts Friday.

But both companies already offer plans that are either less expensive or include additional features -- such as unlimited text messaging -- compared to the new Verizon and AT&T offers.

APPLE VALLEY ? Nico Patillo scored in the 75th minute to lift the Serrano boys soccer team past Apple Valley 4-3 in a Mojave River League match on Friday afternoon that went back-and-fourth.

The match went into halftime tied at 1, but in the second half the teams matched each other goal-for-goal until Patillo's goahead score.

"I'm excited," Serrano coach Harvey Gamble said. "Apple Valley played well. This is the way the Mojave River League always is. We got lucky, but we worked hard to get on top. It was just a good game. It could've gone either way."

Patillo was assisted by Joshua Guillen, who scored Serrano's other three goals. Jordan Evans assisted Guillen on one of his scores.

Goalkeeper Steven Farias made eight saves for Serrano (9-9-1, 5-1 MRL), including a couple of big ones down the stretch, Gamble said.

Gamble added that Carlos Montoya had a great game filling in at sweeper, and defender Bryan Rodriguez and outside midfielder Nate Oler also played well defensively.

Sam Howard, Brad Noss and Stan Thompson each scored, while Anthony Caudle had an assist for Apple Valley (8-9, 1-4 MRL).

Kierstyn Cruz, Rayana Speight and Chelsea Oliver had one goal and one assist apiece. Becky Lyons and Rosanna Lam each dished out an assist for Granite Hills (13-3-1, 5-0 Desert Sky League).

The Cougars received some reinforcement on their defensive line with the return of senior defender Adrienne Bradbury, who has been out since Dec. 19 with a hamstring pull.

A.J. Rosales. Brianna Johanson and Britney Roberts each scored for Sultana (12-3-2, 5-1 MRL). Megan Baum, Kelly Keyes and Megan Morgenstern had one assist apiece.

The Sultana defense only allowed two shots attempts. Coach Danny Polmounter said Baum has stepped up as the center midfielder in replace of Bree Moffett, who has been out with an ankle injury since the last time the Sultans played the Scots. Moffett is expected back some time next week.

Friday's game was pushed back 15 minutes after the Sultana bus broke down on the way to Lake Arrowhead.
